A diver has been chased by a Caribbean reef shark in the Cayman Island.
Jason Dimitri was culling invasive lionfish a little east of Frank Sound on March 13, 2014.
He was at a depth of about 70 feet filling up his container with the detrimental fish, when a reef shark took notice and began chasing Dimitri.
The spearo was able to use his Hawaiian sling to fend off the shark, which made several charges. Dimitri eventually dropped his catch container and the shark followed it as it sank down to the reef.
Dimitri was unharmed in the incident and has no hate towards the shark.
“The shark was acting in his natural environment. I have no ill will toward him and will get back in the water and continue to protect the reef for future generations,” he wrote on YouTube.
Lionfish have very little natural predators and can decimate local fish populations.
“I want to make it clear that I am hunting lion fish to help protect the reef from the destruction that they cause.
“I would strongly encourage anyone out there to donate to REEF.org or other organizations to help protect our reefs, Sharks and the beautiful creatures in them,” he said.
